My cat from back home died on Saturday. Pookie was with us for 19 years (which has got to be some sort of World Record). Her smooshed face, weird snorting noises and propensity for space heaters will be missed. Having pets die really hurts more than it should.

Congratulations to my brother Chris for completing the Tough Mudder competition with his team “Black Opps”.
The 10-12 mile obstacle courses are designed by British Special Forces to test all around strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie. Forget finish times. Simply completing a Tough Mudder is a badge of honor. On average, only 78% of participants finish the event. Tough Mudder has raised over one million dollars for the Wounded Warrior Project.

The last time the Iowa Hawkeyes won the Big 10 Track and Field Championship was in 1967. My father was on that team, along with a few other all-time greats of Iowa Track, including the current head-coach Larry Wieczorek.
Today, 44 years later, in the same town, the Iowa T&F team won the Big 10 Championship for the first time since that ‘67 team. My Dad and I were there to see it, and it was an incredible win. The entire meet came down to the last event of the day (as it should be), the 4x400M relay. Going into the 4x4, Iowa was behind Minnesota, 117.5 to 118. This race would decide the championship. This photo is of my Dad, about 1 minute before the race began. In his words, “I think I’m going to puke, just like I did then.” The excitement was palpable. With four incredible sub-48 splits (3:06.70), the Hawks edged out Minnesota for the win by about 8 meters on the anchor leg. Pandemonium ensued, people stormed the track, Coach Wieczorek was drenched with Gatorade and hoisted upon shoulders. I was losing my mind, there may have been more than a few fans choking back tears, and my Dad was there to be a part of another great victory for the Iowa Track family. It was an honor to be there with my Dad, and it was an amazing day to be a Hawkeye. As is every day.   (written by my brother Chris Kelley)

Thank you, Please, Sir, Ma’am: Workplace or home.

A good habit is 3 minutes for everyone every day. Their kids recital, husband’s home run, wife’s job may not be high on your list but it is tops on theirs. Listen to their lives and the rest of the day will be smoother. And you might learn something. Put your pencil or your mouse down and listen.

Remember “Harvey” with Jimmie Stewart: “In life you must be oh so smart or oh so nice.” We mostly start out trying to be smart. There is always someone smarter and faster coming from the pack. Nice works forever. Fast slows, sharp dulls. Thank you, Please, Sir, Ma’am, Listening do not age.

"Parabolic? That line is not parabolic. That would be a bad thing, because the growth line would come crashing back down after peaking. If exaggeration is what the author is shooting for, they could say exponential. Though it’s closer to polynomial growth, and if it were me, I would stay conservative and just refer to the graph as non-linear."

This will be my mother when she’s old…only, you know, from a horse ranch in southern Missouri - not Degh, Azerbaijan.

True story: My mom had this happen to her drain pipe.  A crapload of bullsnakes got caught in the wire mesh during a large flood, which clogged up the drain to the house, causing the basement to flood.  So, my mother went out in the thunder & lightening, WITH A PAIR OF HEDGE TRIMMERS, straddled the drain and snipped the heads off the snakes, pulled them threw until enough were cleared that the rest could wriggle out.
My mom is more bad ass than your mom.

Marinated in NPR, sauteed in Hip Hop, garnished lightly with Kung-Fu movies, washed down with a Guinness and served with a side order of cleverness. Has been described as “Mary Tyler Moore meets Pee-Wee Herman”.

Delightfully ambiguous with a dollop of intellect. Chilling in Brooklyn, NY.
